Montale, French Ambassador of Oud

Perfumer Pierre Montale's fascination with the Arab world culminated in 2003 when, after setting out to gather the region's most sought after ingredients, he began his journey of composing fragrances with jealously guarded essences of rose, incense, amber, cedar and precious woods to name a few. 

Among these prized compositions, his most popular and famed accord is that of oud, for which he considers himself a Western ambassador of sorts. 

The fragrant Asian ointment- typically used in the gulf region and Saudi Arabia- is extracted from the oud tree by means of a painstaking process known only by the few privileged enough to practice and understand the exact methods of this tradition.

When an Aquilaria/Agar Tree is infected by a Sparasitic fungus, the tree naturally secretes a defense against this parasite and yields a dark and aromatic resin. This exquisite raw material is then gathered manually, and sheltered from  light in cellars over the course of several years leading up to distillation. Present  in some Middle Eastern spiritual practices, oud is said to possess transcendental qualities.
